The point of arguments should be to figure out the idea that's the closest to the objective truth, and not to convince anyone of your opinion. Arguments should be respectful and the participants should be ready to agree to disagree if they find that they are now just repeatedly going over the same ground. Also in arguments people should consider the other person's opinions completely separately of who that person is and what qualifications they have. Smart people can have dumb ideas and dumb
