Wikipedia in Levantine Arabic

Hello! Sorry for the cold message. I noticed you are an experienced editor, especially with subjects related to the Levant. We are trying to initiate some work around a version of Wikipedia in Levantine Arabic. If you or anyone you know could be interested please let us know. Any help or pointers would be really appreciated. CC: @FunLater @A455bcd9 - TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 21:07, 15 January 2024 (UTC)

Hey TheJoyfulTentmaker. It does sounds like a nice idea, but Im not sure how it will be realized considering the fragmentation of the Levant leading to 4 main dialects. Hence, unlike Egyptian Arabic, you will have a conflict between different editors on which dialect should represent Levantine Arabic: Syrian, Lebanese, Palestinian and Jordanian. I would be more than happy to help though.--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 10:00, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
Hello, I'm a native speaker from Lebanon and have been contributing a little to the wiki for a few months. Regarding variations between Levantine's dialects, I don't think it's a big issue, as long as all Levantine Arabic speakers can understand what is written. Maybe we should add rules against changing words to one's own dialect later.
Here's an incomplete to-do list of things contributors (including me) need to do:
  • Should ع be connected to other words when it means على, as in ع البيت? How about هـ, as in هالبيت? Should the و be connected to other words, as in أنا و إنتا?
  • Should we add an alif after the و in plural words? Should we write حملوها or حملوا? Should we write حملوه or حملو?
  • Do we use ١٢٣ or 123?
  • Should we use پ for P? Should we use ڤ for V? Should we use گ/ݣ for hard Gs, such as the G in go and إنگليزي, or غ/ج/ك? If we add non-MSA letters, what would the ABCs be?
  • Should we use كانون الأول or ينيار or جانيواري or جانڤيا?
  • Writing more pages.
Would you be interested in joining a group on Discord (or another platform) for the Levantine wiki if I make one? FunLater (talk) 16:36, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi @Attar-Aram syria! Thanks again for offering help with this project. If you are still interested, we have set up a Discord Server for the Levantine Arabic Wikipedia. If you have time, your participation would be very valuable. TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 05:08, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Hello @Attar-Aram syria, it's been almost a year, I hope all is well! I just wanted to let you know that the Levantine Wikipedia is getting some traction. We now have 3 native speakers contributing. If you are interested in helping, just 11 edits per month would make you counted an active contributor and that would really help with the approval of the project. The dialect seems to be converging toward Damascus and Beirut, and ChatGPT seems to help a lot with the initial Levantine translations, as a rough first draft. You can contribute about anything you enjoy, or just make small edits or fixes. Best wishes, TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 04:54, 19 February 2025 (UTC)

Palmyra

I know you're not very active these days, but I wanted to alert you that I've started a discussion about the lack of information on the damage done to these ruins in recent years. Ed [talk] [OMT] 04:51, 17 June 2025 (UTC)

  • On this note, I was just thinking your articles are missed at GAN and FAC! Any chance you'll go back to writing articles like that? FunkMonk (talk) 12:35, 15 December 2025 (UTC)

Hallo Funkmonk and Ed. I started here out of interest in history then was bombarded by discussions with agenda driven editors who are here to claim this old city is Kurdish, that historical figure is Arab, Assyrian ... etc It put me off and I didnt want to spend my energy and time on these rubbish discussions. Im planing a comeback which will start by reviewing the featured articles I wrote as they have deteriorated in quality lately due to mass edits by different users without discussions. Hopefully I will find the motivation again early in 2026. Thanks alot for checking on me.--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 18:29, 22 December 2025 (UTC)

  • Thank you today for Zenobia, introduced (in 2017) as "about a very interesting woman, Zenobia, the queen of Palmyra. Often, her story is distorted by romanticism and myths, which ignore the fact that she was a historic monarch whose actions were not really based on romantic motives. I re-wrote the article with the aim of giving a clear picture of the historic queen, and gave the romantic accounts their share, but also noted them for what they are: romance."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:41, 15 March 2026 (UTC)
adding: Of the four topics I helped to bring to the main page, I'm most proud of a woman's work, so made it my story. As it happens, last year's story OTD was about the woman. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:08, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
