Re The Bartered Bride: an IP changed the name Gortiz to Goritz, which I reverted because the image has that name, File:Otto Gortiz as Kezal.jpg, but I'm a bit suspicious, because Otto Goritz is an opera singer, while a search for "Otto Gortiz" yields only Wikipedia mirrors. Thank you for the article, doing justice to someone who died, saying "Thorpe was the most talked-about politician in England 40 years ago, for all the wrong reasons – see Thorpe affair for details. Last December he died, and a new biography came out – publication had been delayed for fear of libel laws. I've used this new material to expand Thorpe's biographical WP article, and provide a fuller account of his life. I suppose, however, that what will always remain most prominent in readers' minds are the sensational events that finished his career prematurely."! There seems now no day without someone in recent deaths who has no article or two lines, - that's what I do, neglegting FAC. Today is a sad record. three of them: Sylvia Bretschneider, Ellen Schwiers and Heather Harper. I am happy I wrote at least a friend's article before he died. RIP. It was a surprise birthday gift. Vespro della Beata Vergine

Brian, I come to you as the expert on Monteverdi I know here. I want to improve Vespro della Beata Vergine to at least GA quality, a work I love very much, and am going to perform in choir in September. I looked at what we have, and so far only fixed some of the formatting errors. The article has a long unreferenced section "History and context" which has little historical facts and a lot of OR about possibilities. Do you know where I would find reliable sources for a history section that deserves the name? Any other help is also most welcome. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:25, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

The first I took over from the composer's article is the Kemp review in Gramophone, a decent summary. Will look for more, especially the Whenham book on the 1610 Vespers, and dropped some facts with undue weight that really would require a ref. Language question: "The Vespers is" sounds wrong to me, which is strange as the German "Vesper" is a singular word. If you tell me that it is fine, I'll overcome the strangeness. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:34, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

If you are prepared to take this article on with a view to an eventual GA or FA, you are welcome to use the notes which I prepared a couple of years ago when I was thinking of developing it myself. You will find these on User:Brianboulton/Sandbox10. Essential books are the Cambridge Guide, and Whenham's book on the Vespers. The list of articles and websites may be out of date now - some of the articles require JSTOR access. Good luck with this - it's a formidable project to take on. Definitely plural in English, as with, say "psalms". Incidentally, much of the Kurzmann book is replicated in the Cambridge Companion. You can also use the Claudio Monteverdi article when trawling for other sources. Brianboulton (talk) 13:33, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
Just to make sure: so it should be "the Vespers are ..."? - Monteverdi's article is where I found the two sources already used. It will be a slow proces, parallel (or rather after) to the daily short article, often in collaboration with LouisAlain who prolifically translates from French and German. Gerda, The Cambridge Companion to Monteverdi and Whenham's Monteverdi: Vespers (1610) have large chunks available at Google Books. If you need any help getting articles from JSTOR, let me know (selection). By the way, The WP article on Vespers begins "Vespers is a sunset evening prayer service in the Orthodox, Roman Catholic..." Thank you! The Whenham is what I found and used already (a bit so far). Do we have to distinguish if Vespers means "a service" (singular) or a composition (of many movements in this case)? With article or without? Update: I made some progress, please check. In the lead, I find no source for the longer name in Latin, and think the explanation of what vespers is might go to the body, - do you agree? Thank you for your kind words! The Bondfield article was part of a trilogy on women politicians, the others being Ellen Wilkinson and Bessie Braddock – you may be interested in looking at these. Of course, there's a great many more sources to draw on when dealing with these major figures, but congratulations to you on finding and expanding such an interesting minor character as Mabel Phillipson, of whom I previously knew very little beyond her being one of the earliest women MPs.
