Hi there, I just want to thank you for this edit. I saw your edit summary, which was the very reason I created Category:LGBTQ American activists and its parent & sibling cats last year. Thought you might like to know about their existence. :) Anomalous+0 (talk) 06:16, 20 May 2026 (UTC)

Regarding the Freelander marque
Hello, I've noticed some disagreements in recent edits regarding the ownership of the Freelander brand, and I'd like to clarify a few points:
1.Although the Freelander brand originated from a JLR license, it has essentially become an independent business unit under the Chery Group. You can refer to this link for details: https://www.donews.com/news/detail/1/4605510.html. At its core, Freelander is a brand managed, invested in, developed, and marketed by Chery, with little remaining connection to JLR beyond the name itself—similar in nature to the MG brand under SAIC. As for using the Changshu JLR plant for production, this is primarily aimed at revitalizing JLR's underutilized production capacity in China, and can be seen as a graceful exit strategy for JLR in the Chinese market. Currently, the brand's headquarters and marketing center are located in Shanghai Gubei, its R&D center is at the National Exhibition and Convention Center, its production base is in Changshu, and it has a research institute in Suzhou. See:http://auto.news18a.com/news/storys_243582.html
2.Freelander has established an independent sales channel in China under Chery and is not operated by JLR. This fundamentally distinguishes it from the AUDI brand jointly established by SAIC and Audi, which is co-owned by both parties and sells through Audi's existing sales network in China. Hope this could help clarify the facts and resolve the differences. Thanks. Infinty 0 (talk) 20:29, 18 June 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for responding here.
- 1. Yeah I think you might have a point here. Chery seem to be the ones using it under license. Originally I was thinking of putting the Freelander cars in the article listing foreign brand vehicles made by Chinese companies in addition to a bunch of other brands selling or about to sell Chinese vehicles, so I edited the pages to match that, but I understand why some editors would disgaree. I reverted to my edits since you claimed it was "owned by Chery", which is just not true. That would be akin to saying MG Rover owned the Rover brand during the period they were making and selling Rover cars in the UK under license from BMW. Though I would also like to mention how some English-language sources consider Freelander to be a brand seperate from both Chery and JLR's brand portfolios, like JLR's own press release, though this might just mean the brand will use a new dealer network seperate to other brands from Chery.
- 2. I don't think this point is crucial in determining the brand to be Chery's or part of Chery/JLR. From what I've seen it seems it will use Chery-JLR dealers in China, but Chery will export them. The Geely Smart cars are distributed by the joint venture, seperate to other Geely and Mercedes brands, but we still consider Smart a Geely brand because Geely makes and develops them in their facilities, while the brand still appears to be wholly owned by Mercedes. Inpops (talk) 17:17, 19 June 2026 (UTC)
- It is indisputable that the smart brand now belongs under the Geely Holding. Geely is not only responsible for the development, production, management, and marketing of smart vehicles but also holds a direct controlling stake in the brand. While the joint venture is currently owned 50:50 between Geely and Mercedes-Benz, Geely's additional 10% shareholding in Mercedes-Benz itself means that, from a controlling-interest perspective, Geely effectively holds sway over the company.
- This position is further supported by Mercedes-Benz's own annual report, which no longer includes smart brand sales figures in its consolidated results (see: https://group.mercedes-benz.com/investors/reports-news/annual-reports/2025/).
- Should there still be any disagreement on this matter, I would recommend closely monitoring the annual reports of both JLR and Chery. Specifically, observing how sales of the Freelander brand are ultimately accounted for by either party would provide definitive and decisive clarity on the brand's ownership structure. Infinty 0 (talk) 07:43, 20 June 2026 (UTC)
- Good points. It is possible that JLR are gaining some financial benefit of some sort for the sale of Freelanders, such as perhaps getting a cut from each model sold, which is why they're fine with it, in addition to them not seeing it as a threat to their own Land Rovers. Jaguar Land Rover also have historically focused on just those two brands while it feels like there is a new brand from Chery or using Chery tech every year, so they probably have the scale to manage and sell the Freelander brand.
