Managing a conflict of interest
Hello, Ramb5144. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization, clients, or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam#External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. DoubleGrazing (talk) 07:00, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, DoubleGrazing. Thank you for the feedback, I will update the article accordingly. In relation to the conflict of interest statement, I do not have a influenceable connection to the topic of this article and will be sure to comply with the guidelines you have provided. Thanks, Ramb5144. Ramb5144 (talk) 07:18, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm not quite sure what 'influenceable connection' means, but let me ask it like this: what is your relationship or connection to the subject? Thanks, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 08:07, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry I should have been more clear. It just means that I used the app but I don’t have a relationship with the developers or anyone who actually contributed. The reason for writing this article is because I admired the app. Ramb5144 (talk) 08:30, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
- You "admired the app" so much that you came on Wikipedia, set up an account, and straight away wrote an article draft on it? And you also uploaded its logo, describing it as your 'own work'? Forgive me, but WP:AGF notwithstanding, I have a feeling there could be more to it than that. Would you like to reconsider your answer? -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 08:38, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
- I completely understand how you could think that. However, this is just a subject I’m passionate about. I’m sure you can understand. Many people are passionate about niche areas or companies, as I am for this one. The reason for this being my first article is because of that reason. I wanted to start off with something I was passionate about and was knowledgeable in. The reason that I uploaded the logo as my own work was because I wasn’t aware of any existing copyright on it and didn’t know how else to put it. If that is incorrect, is there a process I should follow instead? I would genuinely appreciate learning from you, since I am still a novice. Ramb5144 (talk) 08:52, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
- Everything is automatically in copyright the moment it is created, so unless that logo has been licensed in a way that makes it free-for-all, it is someone's copyright, whether you're aware of the owner or not. And by uploading it you have removed the proprietary rights that were attached to it, which I'm guessing the owner may not be very happy about. I will request that it is deleted. (If this draft one day gets accepted, you can then upload the logo under the fair-use rationale, but that doesn't apply to drafts.) -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 08:56, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
- If I contact the creator of the logo and get permission to use it would that work? Ramb5144 (talk) 08:59, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
- I thought you had no connection to them?
- Besides, 'permission to use' means they would be relinquishing their proprietary rights. As in, they would not just be saying it's okay for this logo to be used on Wikipedia, they would be saying anyone in the world can use the logo for whatever purpose they wish and do whatever they want with it. If they're happy to do that, then fine, but they will have to communicate that to Wikimedia, as they are the owners of that IP. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 09:11, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
- All I meant was that I could email them since their email is publicly available online.
- I reached out to them and they informed me that as a non-profit they have a Creatives Commons Copyright on it which allows others "the right to share, use, and build upon a work that the author has created". I will communicate this to wikimedia. In the meantime, I will also gather more credible sources for the article and resubmit only when it is accordance to WP:GNG. Thanks again for your feedback. I read your article on Alvar Aalto and I admire how in-depth it was. I hope to one day reach that point, I will aim to make this article like that. -- Ramb5144 (talk) 17:12, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
