Welcome to WikiProject Women in Red (WiR)!
---
Our objective is to turn red links into blue ones. Our project's scope is women's representation on all language Wikipedias (biographies, women's works, women's issues, broadly construed). Did you know that only 20.38% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women? Not impressed? Content gender gap is a form of systemic bias, and this is what WiR addresses. We invite you to participate, whenever you like, in whatever way suits you and your schedule. Editors of all genders are equally and warmly welcome at Women in Red!

This July WIR will be focusing on Crime and law drawing together themes from previous WIR events on Law, Justice, and Villains! The 17th of July is World Day for International Justice, which commemorates the date on which the Rome Statute establishing the International Criminal Court was adopted. We are focusing on women past and present who have worked to uphold the law and also those who have broken the law.
We hope to create articles for women past and present involved in legal fields or with the law. This could include figures from the legal sphere (lawyers, prosecutors, judges and magistrates, expert witnesses, arbitrators, solicitors, notaries), the scientific sphere (academics, researchers, writers, legal communicators) or the social/community sphere (women's rights activists, human rights activists, police officers). According to a study by Arbitral Women, women account for nearly half of the global legal profession (47%) and around one-third of judges worldwide. Women in law and justices therefore remain underrepresented, and this gap widens in senior roles in legal professions, particularly in non-English-speaking countries.
In addition, we hope both inexperienced and seasoned editors will join us in creating biographies about women who are criminals, scoundrels, rogues, miscreants, and evildoers, both real and fictional. You can even create articles about their "works", perhaps a jailbreak or a heist!
This virtual editathon allows enthusiasts wherever they may be to participate in our initiative. Contributors are of course also welcome to add articles on any other women who deserve to be covered, for example under our #1day1woman priority. See below for lists of red-linked women who have been history's villains.
The main goals of the event are:
- to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by creating biographies of prominent women
- to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action on combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works
- to promote the new/improved articles and images through social media and via nominations to Main Page features Did You Know…? and In The News.
Redlists (lists of redlinked articles to be created)
We have red-link lists on women from all relevant fields, which can be found in our redlist index. A selection of those which might be most useful for this priority is listed below.
