Automatic transclusion on the landing page

Tedious edits like Special:Diff/1325266664, Special:Diff/1326869933, and Special:Diff/1348251230 have been automated in Special:Diff/1348293539 using parser function #time. The implementation handles two weeks of reports – it shows an older report, when the latest one isn't ready yet. This can be trivially expanded to handle three weeks, if needed.

Is this useful? Or would it cause a report that isn't ready to show up on the landing page? User:Igordebraga, User:CAWylie, User:Mravava, please let me know what you think. Feel free to revert if this isn't something that is desired. —andrybak (talk) 21:27, 11 April 2026 (UTC)

I reverted the change, because I realized that the subpage naming format is more complicated than I originally thought 🤦. This more complicated logic could technically be implemented in wikitext with parser functions, but a Lua module would be more suitable. The same module could also be used to make Report schedule at the top of this talk page automatic.
Please let me know what you think of such automation in general. —andrybak (talk) 21:36, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
@Andrybak: Automatic transclusion would be nice, but not if the report isn't finished (I constantly complain about some weeks where it's only done by Saturday; if there was a tranclusion on say, every Wednesday, but the result put a table where half the entries lack write-ups or images, it wouldn't be so helpful). Maybe if we hasten our work we can try this. Otherwise there are three automations that would be welcome: one that created a blank table, one that looked up the article class of each entry for the third column (Toolforge stopped providing those), and most importantly, one that compiled the most viewed pages as soon as the week ended - we had three of those, all crashing at some point. igordebraga 23:24, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
@Igordebraga @Andrybak: there's a way to limit automated transclusion to published reports only; I'll make a draft template and post it here... Vestrian24Bio 03:04, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
Okay, I've created Template:Top 25 Report weekly header which will work together with the Template:Top 25 Report header template; but, something is missing.. I'll check and update. Vestrian24Bio 06:51, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
Used it and seemed to work perfectly. (and @Andrybak: only now I noticed your proposal for an automated Report schedule, can you put that right away?) igordebraga 03:16, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
This template breaks the section "edit" link to the specific weekly report. (The section is named "Most Popular Wikipedia Articles of the Week...") Now it links to the template instead. ~2026-15907-04 (talk) 22:46, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
@Vestrian24Bio - In case you haven't seen this bug. ~2026-15907-04 (talk) 21:26, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
I'm working on a fix for that.
In the meantime, @Igordebraga: just a reminder that |pub=y should only be added after the report is completed as it connects to auto-links and eventually semi-auto transclusion on the landing page. Vestrian24Bio 03:53, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
@~2026-15907-04: Fixed Vestrian24Bio 07:34, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
@Igordebraga: I've just implemented the semi-auto transclusion for the landing page. The configuration on the landing page will only need to be updated once evry 20 weeks, currently it's configured upto September 12th.
The way it works is that it will transclude the latest of the configured reports with |pub=y in the {{Top 25 Report weekly header}} template.
I've also strapped-in the list on top of this page, so it will automatically be updated based on the configuration in the landing page. --Vestrian24Bio 11:09, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
@Igordebraga: there's also a possible way to automatically get the article's class from the talkpage, only one question before that: does class have to be from the respective week of the appearance; because if we automate it will automatically display the current class not the contemporary one. Vestrian24Bio 16:30, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
It's supposed to register the quality at that moment. But go ahead if it's possible - in any case we can after the initial version do an extra edit to just transcribe the class and remove the updating. igordebraga 01:26, 30 May 2026 (UTC)

Surprisingly large number of British topics in the draft report

Brits don't usually have the population to gain a foothold on the page. Serendipodous 11:23, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
